3/20/2011: Nils Fredland calls while "Elixir" plays at Glen Echo, MD's Spanish Ballroom. Elixir's brass starts about 5:00 into the video, gives a whole new feel! I especially like the dancing near the camera/stage in the last couple of minutes, dancers doing fun moves.
VENUE: The Fabulous Spanish Ballroom, Glen Echo, MD.
DANCE: "The Squeaking Reel" by Cary Ravitz
TUNES: "Hundred Pipers" / "Rampant Tolerance."
CALLER: Nils Fredland
BAND: Elixir
-Ethan Hazzard-Watkins (fiddle)
-Owen Morrison (guitar, footwork)
-Anna Patton (clarinet)
-Jesse Hazzard-Watkins (trumpet)
-Nils Fredland (trombone)
Expertly concocted and sure to cure what ails ya, Elixir brews up rich textures laced with rhythmic excitement as elegant melodies evolve into raucous riffs. Lush harmonies, yummy improvisations, and tasty rock and reggae-inspired themes weave in and out of traditional and original Irish, French Canadian, and New England tunes. Curiously refreshing!
CAMERA: Canon S95, "standard" quality, auto settings.
REMARKS: The Spanish Ballroom is a superb dance venue. Built in 1933 and restored in 2003, the art deco style ballroom has a wonderfully bouncy, 7500 SF maple floor which can easily handle 6 lines of contradancers.
