Thanks for posting this, Charlton. I hadn't heard about the pre-World Series ad at all. The money issue really is interesting. Here in Japan, politicians running for office aren't even allowed to send New Year's cards during a year in which they'll be running; this is to level the playing field for politicians who are less well-funded (the assumption being that wealthy politicians can indeed sway potential voters by sending out stacks of persuasive cards).
