The original goal of Veritasium was to show the beauty of science and I think the first minute and a half of this is the closest I've come. This is the last in a series of six videos about slinkies.

same explanations different words. there are 3 forces at work here, gravity, pull of the spring and anchor point. when the anchor point is released there is an illusion of onot falling at the bottom.. actually the bottom of the stretched spring isalways being pulled back to the original relaxed shape. as the top falls the pulling of the bottom happens at a rate equal to the fall so that we see it hover when in actuallity it iks falling as a whole but pulling into itself at the same time.

Pull of the spring and anchor point is the key, i think. If you stretch the slink and frozen it, all fall on the ground. If you stretch a slink horizontally, let it fall and film and slow motion, will see both ends at same speed going to center.

What is the torque motion happening, and why is it propagating faster than the compression wave.
