The author of The Lexus and the Olive Tree, Thomas Friedman states globalization is the inexorable integration of markets, nation-states and technologies to a degree never witnessed before in a way that is enabling individuals, corporations and nation-states to reach around the world farther, faster, deeper and cheaper than ever before, and in a way that is enabling the world to reach into individuals, corporations and nation-states farther, faster, deeper, cheaper than ever before. The focus of the documentary is how globalization and the use of the internet has changed how people gather, process and share information and entertainment. In essence the video documentary the group has completed is the perfect example of globalization of information and entertainment.
Before the creation of the internet mass media information and entertainment was shared four basic ways: television, radio, newspaper, and film. The latter four outlets were effective but limiting. For example, television, film and radio stations have schedules and commercials which consumers must schedule around. In addition, most newspapers only print out once a day and report about events from the day before, therefore limiting the information of current events. With the creation of the internet came the limitless access and saturation of information available to anyone, anywhere.
Currently, web sites such as Hulu, YouTube, NBC, CBS, ABC, and many others have enabled consumers to access information and entertainment as easy as clicking a button. In addition, consumers can skip commercials; pick what show, what scene, whatever time, in whatever language they want, for free. Globalization of entertainment and information sound too good to be true? It is. Instant access to entertainment and information has affected the local and global economy. For example, Movie Gallery, the second top renter of movies filed for bankruptcy in 2007; because, it could not compete with the instant services offered on the web.
Thomas Friedman once summarized globalization as the world getting smaller. The creation of the internet and the demand for instant access to information from anywhere has pushed the development of technology further then ever before. Through the internet students from Auburn, Alabama can create and share their thoughts and research on a global issue. This video documentary is the perfect example of information and entertainment globalization.
