ok, number 1, fish DO NOT EAT WASTE ON PURPOSE!. they will get sick and die much sooner than normal. infact, there arent any species of fish that eat crap for nutrients... and also, it is not recomended to feed them things they would not eat in the wild... tomatoes and carrots? you should give them aquatic plants to eat if you have a substrate or can provide light.

It depends on how big it is.

I have a baby turtle, I would love to know how much water to put in its tank, i only have a little bit over his shell now, like 2 inches of water.

Whatever its length & width it should be 2 times extra water besides that. For instance if its 4 inches in length the water's depth should be 12 inches. Same goes with the area it lives in. They need enough space to swim around, exercise & be active. If you have more space you can even add more water.

From what I have read its pretty normal. Its gross but it doesn't harm them. Maybe u can put some rocks on the bottom of yr tank. This might discourage them to dig & eat & u can also trying cleaning it up when u see it (which is obviously not always possible)
