It wasn't three black snipers. It was one. His full name was Mark James Robert Essex. I'm assuming the Killing of America crew mistook that to read "Mark, James AND Robert Essex". But they were wrong. It was one person. Two snipers were not killed by a night time helicopter assault.

Mark Essex was alone.

In the confusion the police actually ended up shooting each other while Essex lay dead.

The circumstances that brought this on was the previous racial violence in the previous 2 years

where police had repeatedly shot and killed unarmed teens. The city did nothing about it and The Black Panther Party in New Orleans had also been completely immobilized through violent provocation and finally looked up.

@jloy88 : FYI, the military helicopter was used ilegally to shoot Essex. The local military commander let his people use it in violation of the Posse Commitatis Act. The NOLA P.D. must have had a lot of pull to get away with this. The killings started when Essex started a fire and when the fire department was climbing up ladders, he began shooting at them.
