Final War - About to Capture Pooneryn - Oct 04 2008

Soldiers of the 58th Division have succeeded in advancing by breaching at several places the defence bund built by the LTTE terrorists to protect Kilinochchi and Pooneryn.

Troops have consolidated their positions in about one and half kilometres beyond the defence bund. The LTTE also suffered heavy damages in offensives today. Our Special Representative Sujith Kumara giving more details from the battlefront said the LTTE is debilitated today. The 9th Gemunu Regiment of the 58th Division, led by Brig. Shavindra Silva had breached the strong defence bund built by the terrorists to protect Mullaitivu, Kilinochchi and Pooneryn. The bund surrounds the entire area. It is 20 feet in height. Bunkers are built inside. There is an eight feet deep trench in front of the bund and strategically filled with water. Anti personnel mines and booby traps are buried in the entire area. The troops launched attacks on several identified LTTE targets today. There was heavy resistance from LTTE to protect their bastion Pooneryn, although they are forced to retreat.
