Marshall Goldsmith -- Achieving Positive Changes in behavior

Whenever a client makes a mistake, Marshall Goldsmith makes a small profit. He uses small amounts of money to help achieve long-changes in their behavior through an exercise called "No, But, However."




When working on the General's program for the United States Army, the head of the army asked Marshall to describe his favorite client. Marshall's response was "a smart, dedicated, hard working, driven to achieve, honest, ethical, creative, gets results, stubborn, opinionated know-it-all."

The General replied, "Marshall, I think we have a target rich opportunity!"

The "No, But, However" exercise fines an individual $20 if they start a sentence with any of the three words. In one instance, Marshall was reviewing a client's feedback and the client said, "But Marshall." Marshall gave the client a freebee, but noted that if the client were to start a sentence with "no," "but," or "however," he was going to lose $20. The client ended up walking out of the hour and a half session down $420.

The client thanked Marshall, claiming he had no idea that was how he spoke. "I did that 21 times with you bring it to my attention. How many times would I have one it had you not pointed it out to me?"

Using this technique, the individual made incredible progression. As a result, Marshall makes his clients part with a $20 bill each time they exhibit dysfunctional behavior.
