I've been having trouble finding a good video format compatible with YouTube. This one seems to corrupt the first 10 seconds and have a shuddery frame rate. Neither of those issues are actual.
This is my Atari 2600 implementation of Boulder Dash (R) by First Star Software. Here I am (very) briefly showing all 16 levels and how they look on the Atari. It's pretty much complete, and close to perfect. I started programming this in about 2003 and essentially finished in 2007. It's being released as a 2-cave demo in 2011. Many thanks to First Star Software for their support and permission. Thanks, too, to Thomas Jentzsch without whom this would be a much lesser thing.
For those who are wondering "why?" -- the answer is because I can, and I enjoy it.
The screen is only 40 pixels horizontal resolution. Most of the objects are drawn in background graphics, with a single colour per scanline. The multi-colour screen is drawn by alternating colours on successive scanlines and picking which pixels are on and off. There are a (very) few glitches and minor bugs evident in the video -- but I'm working on those :)
That's pretty good... I like the graphics being pulled off on the 2600.
