If there's any game series that anybody worth a damn knows, its Metal Gear.
Snake: Metal Gear?!
The Metal Gear series is well known for its take on the action hero type of fiction. Rather than run in guns blazing shooting the shit outta everything insight, the Metal Gear series asks- nay, DEMANDS that you keep the hell out of the enemy's sight. Its tactical sneaking action, with some suitably hectic (and sometimes fucked up) boss battles thrown in.
Of course, its also remembered for its ludicrously long cut scenes. I've heard that there are cutscenes in Metal Gear Solid 4 that rack up nearly 11 hours total. Some of them are so long, I could probably tear through a good few chapters of the 5th Harry Potter book if I wanted. But then I'd miss out on the misadventures of Solid Snake and the gang.
Speaking of which, thats another thing people love about MGS: the main hero, Solid Snake. Once he was an obscure generic action hero, now he's one of the most recognized video game characters next to Mario, Sonic, Mickey Mouse, Luke Skywalker, Harry Potter and James Bond (Don't worry, Emil Castagnier, you'll be popular one day).
Snake was so well known, its impossible for a Konami game not to have some sort of Metal Gear reference, whether it be Snatcher with its pint-sized robot sidekick named Metal Gear, Boktai, with Snake himself supplying you gear if you need it, or even International Track and Field on the DS, where Snake ends up in a triathlon with Simon Belmont from Castlevania (I bet some expected Alucard or Richter, and I meant Belmont, not Abend)
Hell, Snake even managed a playable appearence on Super Smash Bros Brawl! This was alongside family friendly properties like Kirby and Star Fox! And you have to consider that Metal Gear isn't very family friendly at all.
Snake is a very well known icon for the stealth genre. I haven't heard of a new Splinter Cell game yet and Konami have Metal Gear Peace Walker and Metal Gear Rising on the horizon. Snake is just as an icon for Metal Gear as the titular robots themselves. You probably remember the gigantic shitstorm that occured when we picked up Metal Gear Solid 2 and found ourselves controlling king blondie Raiden who could totally take Emil in a fight. I mean, did Emil Castagnier ever say "We managed to avoid drowning!"
You might also be a fan of the other charatcers, side characters or villains. Some of us relate to beleaguered nerd Hal Emmerich, better known as Otacon, some are endeared to the madcap plot power of Revolver Ocelot, hell, some people have even gone gay for Big Boss. For me, it was always about Major Zero. And to many fans, The Boss is a goddamned legend, a practical martyr.
You may also remember Metal Gear for its merciless demolition of the 4th Wall. Its like if Deadpool had become his own franchise, as mixing in with the seriousness of terrorism and nuclear weapons, it also mixes in some bizarre humour.
The music was also beautiful. Some of you loved the Welsh wailing of "The Best is Yet To Come", some preferred the mournful ballad "Can't Say Goodbye To Yesterday", personally, I am a big fan of "Calling To The Night". But we al love the madly cheesy charm of "SNAKE EATERRRRRRRRRRRRR"
Anyway, this here is the intro movie to the original PSOne/PC version of Metal Gear Solid 1. You might have recently tried its GameCube remake, The Twin Snakes. That one was pretty rock awesome, but the old version should be remembered just as much.
The plot of this game is that a group of FOXHOUND operatives have gone rogue and have hijacked a nuclear weapons disposal facility on Shadow Moses Island, and are demanding the charred remains of Big Boss (This is if you rememebr that Big Boss's body burnt to nothing at the end of Metal Gear 2, back in Zanzibar Land). If they don't get Big Boss's body back in 24 hours, they're gonna nuke America. President George Sears wasn't gonna have that and had Colonel Roy Campbell pulled out of retirement, who in turned pulled poor Solid Snake out of retirement. More significant to this game is that the enemy leader is one called Liquid Snake and as you guessed, he is Solid's genetic copy, save for the Cam Clarke British accent. There will be shots fired, bizarre bosses trounced and robots roaring (Plus a masochistic ninja-cum-former war buddy) in this rollercoaster ride so stay buckled.
Anyway, why am I showing this to you all, when I have a perfectly good LP of Metroid Fusion going? Well, when I finish that, if I can't get the translation patch for Tales of the World Narikiri Dungeon 3 to work for more than one scene (Since after the prologue it goes back to Japanese writing) then I'll try an LP of Metal Gear Solid.
