  • Why not. Ajahn Chah said, The breath does not belong to any religion, anyone can meditate by following the breath.

  • Christians, Hindus, Muslim, Jewish and all else, they exist only in the mind.

  • Yea, these religion fanatics are all brainwashed. Big religions are indeed effective for controlling people's mind. I'm already tired of seeing these questions on meditation videos, "can christians do it? Is it ungodly to meditate?"

  • ^But Matthew 17:21 is only found in some bible translation such as the King James, as most scholars today believe it is a later interpolation. I think the NIV adds it as a foot note at the bottom.

  • @M335

Unfortunately, it only makes passing references, and never expounds upon it. The Bible does take a lot of things for granted, as though the authors expect their audience to already know what they mean.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

But the meditation does seem to go along with the other rituals in the Bible. Mat 17:21 says the kind of power to move mountains only comes by "much prayer & fasting". If you pray & fast for a long enough time without a break, youll enter a meditative state

  • I think all of us can find fragments of inspiration from a variety of religions and philosophies.

  • I don't try to reject other point of view above who regarded Buddhism as Philosophy or other religions are better than Buddhism because I also had been taught by Christian school and nuns in secondary and high school and I love them a lot. Rather, I realize that Buddhism goes beyond meditation but revealing the ultimate truth in life.

  • Every religion teaches people to be a good human being. I myself don't know deeply about other religions except Buddhism because I grow up Buddhist world. One thing that makes me respect the taught of the Lord of Buddha is the truth.

  • @thejugglenaut91 While its true many Christ followers do act hypocritical in their daily life, saying that our ideology changes with what people perceive as good is utterly false. The Bible's standards have not changed over the course of time, and they wont change. Personally Ive never, EVER, heard people call meditation a cult or even seen hints to it in a textual form. Quite the opposite actually, we are encouraged to meditate on God's Words daily and apply it to our lives.

  • Buddhism is NOT a RELIGION but a PHILOSOPHY

  • In fact, the bible does actually mention meditation several times, especially in Psalm 119, where it is mentioned 5 times. There's others as well, like Genesis 24:63 "And Isaac went out to meditate in the field at the eventide".

  • I am a Buddhist myself and I understand where you are coming from. Yes you are right, many who call themselves Christians can be hypocritical but then again...so can Muslims, Jews, and even Buddhists. Basically, humans are hypocritical, it is just a coincidence that they belong to one religion or another. If one tries to be mindfull of this, then they can let this hypocrisy pass by the wayside and see that the person is only hanging on to a dogma to try and make sense of their world. Namaste.

  • Amen to that brother
