The problem ain't gasoline, or greed, or stupidity. The problem is intelligent design.

Nature isn't intelligently designed, it's evolved, it is emergent, the order, the structure of nature isn't mandated and enforced, it's happened as a result of all of the individual components following their own rules., in relation to other components. This has generated a lush, wasteful, functional mess called the eco-system.

When people design things, there is no integration, and you get toxic results.
