A tribute to radio and record legend, Hank Spann. for the memorial in LA on November 17, 2009. Audio created by Bobby Jay, PD of WWRL Radio in NY, using some of Hank's air checks from his radio show.
"put your foot on the rock, pat it and dont you dare stop"...."funkier than nine cans of wet magic shave...."have mercy now"..."gotta take two step to the rear and get outta here".."im in the wind new york later"..i grew up listening to hank spann on wwrl, those raps i still can recite em all, espcialy on some of james brown records "let a man come in and do the popcorn" he say "maestro what you gonna do"..push push.."funkier than a mosquita's tweeter",,,,rip hank u really inspired me....
Hank Spann inspired me. He was the single greatest influence for me with respect music enjoyment on the radio. He was something everyone I ever met tried to imitate in NY in the early '70s. He will be sorely missed...
Hank was the best, and yes all rap/hip-hop owes him a debt of gratitude. He was a great MC and he had such a distinguished voice. This was AM radio at it's finest. He used so many raps to intro a song that we naturally listened to the song. Now-a-days there is no one like him,too much opinions & self promo not about the music. RIP,Hank we miss you.
THIS BRING BACK SUCH GOOD MEMORIES.

Hank "Have Mercy Now" Spann was the man, no doubt. He was gracious enough to DJ at our block party in Long Branch, NJ back in the day.
