The n-body sample simulates the motion of bodies under gravitational attraction. It computes all n2 interactions between n bodies, which means a massive amount of computation is performed in total. It makes use of the thread group shared memory available in DirectX Compute Shader to reduce bandwidth.

  • stupidbydesign - Gamer's may not be into physics, but all that money they spend on new hardware for "hyped eye candy crap" is part of what drives the forwarding of this technology. If it weren't for that such crap needing new hardware to look good, we'd all be happy with stock mediocrity (read: Intel Integrated Graphics Solutions)

  • Is it possible to let this thing run long enough to see galaxy formations.

I don't know whether its proven but looking at the galaxies evolution, i think all n-bodies would eventually reach a relative equilibrium similar to that of a galaxy.

I asked this from a nvidia guy at Supercomputing conference in Austin, he didnt have know.

Haven't seen a better PDE solver than nature so far, thats why Quantum computing looks promising, although unlikely to produce a effective one in my lifetime

  • @h2oextremepcs Erm, I was being sarcastic mate, no need to call me an idiot. As I said, powerful GPUs are part of what drives the industry to create content that utilises them. If you don't know how to read between the lines of what I said, you're hardly in a position to be calling me an idiot are you?

  • @Syphadeus dont know what your talking about, GPUs in high end systems are not just for crap eye candy as you call it, there is allot more to building a high spec pc that that. Bloody idiot

  • This how out solar system was made :P

  • @Syphadeus clap clap good speech

  • @xG33Kx You're right "Gamers" doesn't have an apostrophe. I noticed you used a comma whilst telling me this yet neglected to use a period. Consistency is apparently not your strong suit. Additionally, you don't seem to have a point to make - so why not toddle along on your merry way?

  • @Syphadeus Gamers doesn't have an apostrophe, by the way

  • @rotgertesla I think you are right. They would just fly apart.

  • @ATrueSriLankan this particular simulation won't show galaxy formation no matter how long you let it run for several reason: -we currently don't know how to simulate a galaxy without adding dark matter in the problem, -we don't know how to simulate the univers without adding dark energy into the problem,-univers simulations are resolution limited (that mean each dots = thousands of galaxies)

  • Looks wonderful!

  • THAT'S where barred spirals get their bars! Interesting!
