The Drummer (From: 'Musical Toys')
Sofia Gubaidulina was born in 1931 and is one of the most important Russian composers of our time. She studied with Peiko, a pupil of Shostakovich at the Moscow conservatory, and subsequently with Shebalin. Together with Schnittke, Denisov and Silvestrov she is now regarded worldwide as one of the leading representives of New Music.
I love this piece! My son got it assigned last week- for a while it just didn't make sense, but now when he practiced it longer, I started looking forward to hearing it. I am glad my son got a chance to discover such a wonderful composer.

This is great! Shows the influence of Shostakovich, who encouraged her on her Soviet-disapproved musical path (rather like he was). Though, ... there is no "prepared piano" intervention here, unlike her Piano Sonata of 1965. Still, it's amazing that she achieved the percussive effects in the traditional way. Love it!!
