I am working on a Tron Legacy environment and was trying to figure out what to do for the light trails for the light cycles. I thought maybe exporting an animation through maya would look good, but sadly I couldn't figure out how. So I went with making a particle system through UDKs cascade system. I looked through youtube to find out if someone had posted a tutorial on how I might make it. I couldn't find any, but I did end up learning the basics on how they are made. So after tinkering in cascade for about an hour, I finally made something that sort of looks like a light trail. It's still a WIP right now. I think I might tweak the material a bit and play with the duriation and spawn settings on it, but for now I am just excited that I actually found out how to do it. I love UDK!

  • I tried making something like this, but I couldn't get the particle to not face the camera the entire time. (i.e. be locked to 2 axis as opposed to 3.)

Yeah I used the ribbon effect and it just seems to follow the player. I wish I knew more about how to keep it fixed on the lightcycle

If you find out, please let me know. Do you have skype or some way I could contact you for any questions?

  • Not bad! I think you did an especially great job at the material that is placed on the ground. Very nice use of emissive lighting through the material properties.

While I can not comment too much on the trail fx you made as I have not seen the newest Tron (yet!) but it looks pretty damn close to what I can remember from the original.

Ive always felt that it should maybe have a little something extra to it... I dunno. What do you think?
