Here's a classic drum groove if there ever was one! And let's not forget there's only 1 Steve Gadd. There are many ways to approach this tune in the arrangement and style. I went with the classic Gadd lick as he described it with the transcription in an old issue of Modern Drummer magazine. In the first chorus I tried to give it a "beefier" feel with the right hand on the closed x-hat and then the ride bell in the 2nd chorus. Ghost notes on the snare are also a must to fill in the holes and try to give the groove some forward motion. I also did the tambourine track with a REAL tambourine...not some Klingon Synthesized Swill!! LOL! Thanks to Jeff Labella for lending me his RhythmTech tambourine. When I recorded the tamb. track it was mounted on some drum hardware in the vertical postion. I just hit the tamb. with my hand. Fantastic sustain as opposed to the tamb. being played in a horizontal position where the jingles just sit on themselves and decay quickly.
Kique' asked me to do this tune way back in February. I told him I'd love to do it but a few other projects had to be finished first. This was fortunate because it gave me a lot of time to get the groove to feel good in many different styles and tempos. This goes way beyond "learning and playing the notes as written" without the correct feel. The 50 Ways groove itself doesn't take that long to learn, but it's not a military or rigid sounding groove. There's a real tiny slight swing and lope that sits right in the sweet spot. The trick is to really have a command over the feel of the groove and to get your dynamics in order. First learn and play the groove exactly as written. Then play it at different speeds and try to play it with different tunes in different styles. Get a handle on that and then go back and play it the original way and you will notice the improvement in the feel and sound of the groove.
Thanks to Fran Merante for the final stereo drum mix.

Kique and his wife Tere are from Spain. Mike is from New Jersey and I'm right next door to Mike in Connecticut.
