In 1982, two-term Governor Jerry Brown ran for the US Senate against San Diego Mayor Pete Wilson. President Reagan supported Republican Wilson. Brown was facing a major state budget crisis and controversy over aerial spraying for Medflies, among other issues. As this news report shows, Brown relied on an unusual TV ad campaign to try and overcome Wilson's lead. But in the end, Wilson won with 55% of the vote.
