In this video I play the First Chord Progression, a typical example of a Big Band chart.
These 17 lessons are meant to give you a taste of what my book "Playing Straight Rhythm Guitar: A Swing Band Approach" is all about. So what happens next? The diminished and augmented chords along with the altered dominat 7th are studied next. The chords named by the 4th string follow right after. The book ends with a list of imortant sequences of extended chords within a particualr chord form. (An example of this would be Major, Major 7th, Major 6th.) Of course there are many more charts to play. The example that I play at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4WyKDufAxjY could be consided the 18th lesson. It demonstates the final result. Anyone out there who is playing in a high school/college big band and needs some help, please don't hesitate to ask a question in the youtube comment section.

what is the Db Dim in lesson 17?

That's a good question. The chord form starting on the 6th string, 6th fret is
6,X, 5,6, 5, X,X with a short bar ( 4th through 2nd strings) on the 5th fret. The chord is symmetrical and is named by any of it's notes. The one I've described is a Db diminished.

It's not a very good guitar. I don't play guitar much so it's not worth it for me to get anything better than what I have.

My guitar was an old Dan Electro is not perfect. Also,I haven't played rhythm guitar in years. When I was at the Universtity of Arkansas, I signed up for jazz band, but I soon realized that I didn't know what to do. I read three Mel Bay rhythm guitar books and figured out how to play. I just thought people would like to read/hear what I learned. BTW, when you learn the chords named by the 4th string (not included in the youtube lessons). It's a whole different world.
