The feeling is there as always. But the wobble on top is very pronounced here. Yet the drama, the musicality, the phrasing....vulcanic fire! If only she had sung this in 1953....

Querzeo: You are absolutely correct. She recorded it in a "test" recording for EMI in 1953, and she sang it flawlessly, with complete ease, freedom, and perfection. The role of Donna Anna never appealed to her, or so she said. I can see why. Callas' Donna Anna would have done one of two things to Don Giovanni: she would have kicked him in his privates, rendering him forever castrated, or would have possibly enjoyed the sexual attention.

Its beautifully, thanks for sharing!

Beh.. direi orribile. Un Callas incapace di sostenere una certa tessitura se non con voce gridata, urlata e strozzata.
-
Yes, I have absolutely no idea what notes she is singing! I prefer the breathy quality Renée Fleming often uses in this role, not to mention the speaking-voice style of her recitatives.
-
Yes, appalling performance. It's almost as though she is of one mind throughout the aria, pleading for vengeance. How ridiculous is that??!
-
Yes, I know! When she pleads for blood and vengeance, she needs a lighter, more pleasant, almost floated tone. This is too strongly sung.
-
The intent is great, but so much of the singing is simply painful. I do think Callas could have been a wonderful Anna earlier in her career. However, she could have done better, even in 1963-4, She basically sings the aria as loudly as possible throughout, not a single nuance. And what's with the bad break for breath at the first "lo chiede il (breath) tuo cor"? That's the sort of thing a student does, not Maria Callas!

@AOG93 Or she would prove she's her father's daughter.
-
@Zva26 but that is not this recording... where is that recording? all she has from that session is the non mi dir... actually that recording is from 1954 btw.
-
@Zva26 LOL! Right! Imagine Callas giving her intense, burning stare to Don Giovanni! LOL, the comendattore would seem harmless after that! Anyway, be as it may, I wish she'd sung this role at least once live and-or in the studio... anything sung by her is magical and divine.
