This is a drum solo that David King performed leading into the Bad Plus's rendition of Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit. It just so happened that this night, 5-9-07, at Soho in Santa Barbara, The Bad Plus had to perform as a duo due to their Bassist, Reid Anderson, sustaining an injury to his hand. The DW drums sounded amazing.

    King or Morrello?

Who would win in the ultimate drum battle?

Having the good fortune to see both of them play less than 5 feet from me, I'd have to say King would come out victorious. Of course, this is assuming the battle would be tomorrow. It would be easy to argue that there would be no King (and many other greats) if it weren't for the influence of Joe. Morello can still shock even Bozzio with his single stroke rolls. ;)

I've seen Buddy, Cobham, Steve Smith, Elvin Jones, Rod Morgenstein, Bruford, Palmer, GInger Baker, and lots more--King must be seen live and he is brilliant-his syncopated bass drum beats along are a sight to behold as well as his 4-limbed independence. Dynamics? from the softest to the sounding like Bonham. One-handed rolls? Yep, without using the rim. Taste, innovation, and, btw, funny as hell. An absolute genius with chops to die for.

It's like his left foot has a brain of its own.

I saw him perform Stravinsky's Rite of Spring at Duke University performance hall, it was one of the most awe inspiring moments of my life, maybe even a sort of spiritual experience. Then after the show I got King, Anderson and Iverson to sign my copy of Blunt Object....fuckin SWEET

    this band is the shit

I can see how it's difficult for anybody who doesn't understand the music of the Bad Plus to get into this video. That said, once you get into it, you come to realize how truly mind boggling it is that anybody can actually do these things. I've had the privilege to see him live, and it blew me away. This man deserves much more credit than is given by the average Nickleback fan who says it "sounds bad"
