(NECN: Scot Yount, Boston) - No matter how you look at it, even driving a car across the Tobin Bridge seems a bit risky. Now imagine being about 10 or so inches tall, and making your way across the famous scary span on foot, or make that paws, going the wrong way, against traffic.

Doctor Mark Garneau/Angell Animal Medical Center: "We're not quite sure what happened with him, whether he happened to wander up and get hit by a car, or whether he was actually thrown from a car we are not quite sure at this point."

This Chihuahua-Jack Russell mix now named Tobin by the way, is in one piece but barely. Doctors are amazed he is alive. The MSPCA says he was sighted coming from Chelsea, made his way across the bridge and was in the tunnel to Boston, again going the wrong way before a state trooper scooped him up.

Doctor Mark Garneau/Angell Animal Medical Center: "He did not a lot of intensive care and he was in a lot of pain for the first few days it is always tough but he had done great."

So right now the MSPCA is looking for donations to help with Tobin's care. He's got a fractured hip, maybe some fractures in his pelvis and he had a collapsed lung, but he is doing pretty well. They're also looking for his owner, or a new one."

So, here's the deal. Tobin's medical bills are up to about six grand at this point. That's a lot of money but let's face it he is a pretty brave little guy, even though only he knows where he was going in the first place.

Doctor Mark Garneau/Angell Animal Medical Center: "He has a really good prognosis for recovery, and he probably will need to be in a foster home where someone has experience to take care of him. Or at least a few weeks and after that will likely be looking for a home for him."
