Sure to bring tears to the eyes of Kiwis far from home, "Pokarekare Ana" is a traditional New Zealand love song. It was probably communally composed about 1914. Song-writer Paraire Tomoana, who polished up the song in 1917 and published the words in 1921, wrote that it emanated from the North of Auckland and was popularised by Māori soldiers who were training near Auckland before embarking for the war in Europe.

I can't re-do this at a higher resolution as the original was captured on a SONY Handycam on Video-8 in 1999.

  • The women have more balls than the men. Just saying.

  • Always loved this song.. use to sing it in primary school

  • Beautiful vocals and great melody....love it!

  • Versione originale in lingua Maori "Pokarekare Ana"

  • In all its versions - so beautiful - as is this evocative rendition! Thank you!

  • It also brings tears in the eyes of none-Kiwis... "Pokarekare ana" is touching my soul and reminds me to the beautiful time which I spent between 1985 to 1986 in Aotearoa.

No borders - no nations - no wars!

    Arohanui from Europe

  • This is wonderful!!
