This is a little music video I had to film for my Introduction into Digital Video Production. I decided to use an instrumental song so I could film it more like a silent short film instead. The class is an easy class and I felt it would give me some time to experiment with filming. In this video I wanted to practice some shots and scenes I've had in my mind for a future short that I want to film this Summer. I also took this as an opportunity to get more acquainted with my Twoneil 35mm adapter. The 35mm adapter was used only during the cemetery scenes. I filmed everything over three days at three different locations, which is the first time I've filmed somewhere other than just my home. The camera used was a Canon HV30.

The song used is "Virginie" by Einstürzende Neubauten. It is off their experimental piano piece album Klaviermusik. I definitely suggest checking out their music if you haven't heard them before. Just so you know, most of their other music is nothing like this song or other songs from this album.

My concept behind this video came about when I originally wanted to shoot it more like a 8mm home movie. I did a few test shots and still film the beach scene thinking that was what I was going to do, but decided against it. Originally it was going to be similar in the manner that my character was going to watch the home movies of him and his dead girlfriend, and show him getting upset over her death. It was going to be a rehashed version of my short film "False Dreams," but with a different central idea. There were going to be similar shots of me watching the movies just like in "False Dreams."

In the final version of the video, it is about me grieving over my girlfriend, played by my actual girlfriend, who had committed suicide. We see an old memory of them at the beach, but we start to see where she becomes distant from my character. Eventually we see the final night of her life as she commits suicide. It's a very generic story and isn't original what-so-ever. At times it seems like I was trying to be overly artsy with this video.

Overall, I feel the video actually came out pretty well. While filming I had doubt that it would actually look good, but I proved myself wrong. There are instances where I feel I could have done something better, but there is really nothing I can do now.

On that note, I hope you enjoyed my visual interpretation of "Virginie" by Einstürzende Neubauten.

As always, I'm constantly looking for others to make movies with. So if you live in Northwest Indiana or the Chicagoland Area go ahead and contact me so we can hopefully work something out.

  • Nice film dude. Quite sober overall, however it keeps that mourning poetic atmosphere that gets darker as it goes with the musical melody, and by the way, it was pretty clever that you used music by Einstürzende Neubauten which is one of my favorite bands. Greetings form Colombia.

Thanks man. Einstürzende Neubauten is pretty fantastic.

  • i think the secret of good filming is in the editing, in how you tease out the flow of story, idea and narrative. for this I'd say WIN :)

  • @Oscar301 Thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate it. Especially since I spent quite a bit of time editing this to make a working flow. Thanks again!

  • wow that was great!!! really good cinematography. how long have you been making films?

  • @GabePine

Well, I used to make short films with my friends in Middle School, but after that I never really did much. Other than my short "False Dreams" and this video, I haven't done too much. I'd say maybe 3 years at most of actually making films, and within those three years very little filming was actually done.

    Thanks for the complements too!

That would make this a better video though.

  • @beethousand1

    Unfortunately no.

  • What, no kittens crying at the feet of a dejected Unicorn?

  • Love the piano. Very washed out looking.
