From producer Morgan Spurlock (Super Size Me) and director Rob VanAlkemade, "What Would Jesus Buy?" examines the commercialization of Christmas in America while following Reverend Billy and the Church of Stop Shopping Gospel Choir on a cross-country mission to save Christmas from the Shopocalypse (the end of humankind from consumerism, over-consumption and the fires of eternal debt.) The film also delves into issues such as the role sweatshops play in America's mass consumerism and Big-Box Culture. From the humble beginnings of preaching at his portable pulpit on New York City subways, to having a congregation of thousands -- Bill Talen (aka Rev. Billy) has become the leader of not just a church, but a national movement.

  • well if you really notice what's going on here... or if you've read up on him a bit, you'd realize it's not a real religion. he's an actor and street performer. he's just trying to get people to stop shopping mindlessly.

as for the money issue, i think the movie that came out of his had free showings at the cities they were in.

so know what you're talking about before you call someone a jackass. jackass.

  • He talks like he`s on TBN

  • @holsisyolswa this is called satire, you've seen it in movie. He's doing the joke thing to say real things. Before I knew this guy existed, I understood that people had more spiritual fervor and enthusiasm for consumerism than their own religions. I hear people "preach" about the importance of the latest Iphone with more or just as much conviction as a religious fundamental topic. So the idea that religion is dead in a modern age is not true, its just called consumerism with a different god.

  • Seems a few people are confused. The good reverend isn't advocating never shopping or spending money. The point is that you should pay attention and question who you are giving your money to. All that cheap shit you buy at Wal-Mart is built on the backs of child labor and human misery, millions of people are neck deep in debt to credit card companies that thrive on you mindlessly shelling out money. Think before you buy, it's a pretty simple thing to do.

  • is this guy being funny or is he serious? got a few good points. but the white coat? are u using imagery to make us think your a professional or a suited know it all. scientific man?

    thanks

  • scwild, poverty is a result of the production(and consequent consumation)way of our society.charity wile making as you don't see this is hypocritic as seeing this movie and still believe it's all ok in buying tons of presents for a happier christmas.

    ..and download your movies!

  • so what you are saying is that he spent tons of money on trying to get rich people to stop wasting money. when in fact he could have used this money to help feed ahomeless kid or. so he is still a jackass!

  • lol i love his corny hand movements mocking those corny tv preachers

  • he is still a jackass I mean seriously how much mindless money was put into making his movie and paying him so now you are a jackass too.
