wow..did you see how they swarmed the cameraman like an angry mob. i know these situations can be touchy when a fellow officer/friend is shot, but the police are just as guilty when it comes to exploitation

I agree. The crime scene is not the hospital, but

Unless the crime scene was at a coffee shop, that remark is uncalled for.

This could have handled professionally but instead they come after the cameraman and the reporter (i'm ass-uming) like thugs.

The city settled a claim the photographer filed against the Police for 175,000 dollars. That is what the taxpayer paid to cover the Police abuse of authority.

As reasonable as your comment sounds - they aren't. Civil rights and the law don't take a back seat to "respect" and "decorum". Sorry. The cops don't give a shit about "respect" when they are doing their jobs either. The man has a job to do, he is doing it legally. The Police had no power to restrain him and they wound up paying this guy a huge bag of money because...quite simply...they were wrong and they were wrong under the color of authority. BTW...it's "Tensions" not "tentions".....

Henry K. Lee, Chronicle Staff Writer

San Francisco Chronicle June 8, 2011 04:00 AM

    OAKLAND --

The city of Oakland has agreed to pay $175,000 to a former KGO-TV cameraman who filed a federal civil rights lawsuit accusing several police officers of attacking him and breaking his camera as he tried to film outside a hospital on the day four officers were killed in 2009.

Douglas Laughlin said several officers accosted him....

since that's what we already have to do, handle it ourselves, why would we all of a sudden trust the police to help after seeing this?

you should maybe watch the video again. the police line wasn't there, because this was not a crime scene at all. the raging lunatic cops put the police tape up to keep that one person out.

there was no police tape up until after the thugs attacked the cameraman.

if any other person did what those cops did, they'd be arrested and charged with assault.

lawsuit won because, thankfully, your notion of right and wrong is, well, wrong.

it doesn't matter if the the cameraman was asked politely to leave. filming in public is not a crime, and no person has the right to thuggishly prevent the press from filming.

you are stating your belief that your personal wishes somehow trump freedom of the press. wrong country.
