A classical question in algebraic geometry is how many cone-singularities a surface of a given degree can have. For degree 7 surfaces this problem is still unsolved. The movie shows part of a septic found by Oliver Labs in 2006. It has 99 cone-singularities (not all can be seen in this movie). By works of Chmutov, Breske, Labs and van Straten it is known that no more than 104 cone-singularities are possible.

This movie was made using surfex. A higher resolution version can be found at

  • These cone singularites remind me awfully of carnival hats... Maybe it's some bizarre subconcious drive of ours to make carnival hats that mirror cone singularities... Who knows? x3

Great stuff, I watched through all your videos. Thanks a lot for uploading them and the (for me way too hard) explanations on the side. i think I liked the Klein bottle best, it's fascinating. Or possibly the "Compactness and Stereographic Projection", but that mostly because of the well-made video.

  • Thanks for your kind remarks. I'm glad you liked the videos!

  • Oh, and for the more serious (or educated) among us, you might even include the equation you're mapping here... if that's what you're doing. Heck, like I said, i don't know... so feel free to ignore me, if you like.

  • I think I like this. Not that I know at all what I'm looking at. If you have time - and the interest - perhaps you could soften your explanation, a bit, into a more civilian-friendly form. That would be nice.

I'm a believer that on some deep inner level we all understand everything... but that doesn't help the conscious mind, much. A simpler explanation might.

  • nice

  • this would be cool as a screensaver

  • Have been watching, and will be watching. Love these videos, thank you for continuing to make them. Aloha!
