Sung by 54-year-old Sofia Blanco of Livingston, Guatemala, "Nibari' was composed by Sofia's husband, Gregorio, with whom she has been married since they were both 18. Sofia and Gregorio have been singing together throughout their lives, and they have raised four children in this musical environment.
One day, Gregorio, a fisherman by trade, was walking to his boat when he overheard an elder relative scolding her teenage granddaughter. the granddaughter had been misbehaving, leaving home for months at a time to hang out with her friends, and the grandmother offered her strong words of advice. Like so many Garifuna songs, Gregorio took this everyday conversation and turned it into a song.
