This ultra short documentary explains the history of compulsory schooling and advocates choice in education.
It starts 200 years back with Prussian absolutism. There, under the regime of a dictatorship, compulsory schooling was invented and implemented on a massive scale.
It continues to show how educators such as Maria Montessori, Célestin Freinet, Peter Petersen and Rudolf Steiner had a hard time challenging their governments ideas on education.
I made this micromentary to rise awareness about the true origins of our school system. It is also a call for action, to liberate ourselves from this outdated and harmful institution. Our society is changing ever faster, we no longer need a bureaucratic school system. We need learning environments that are way more open and flexible. We need choice in education.
Let me know if you like it, and if so help us spread the word!
PPS The music is 'O Fortuna' from Carmina Burana by Carl Orff. I didn't know at first but it appears that there could be no more suitable piece of music to go with the content of the video: it was written in Nazi Germany during the war.
Someone was so kind to translate this text in Portugese:

I love the tower at 1:55. Does anyone know where it's from? Looks Renaissance or post-Rnsc style so it's probably Babel would be my guess...maybe it could be something sci-fi as late as Verne but I doubt it. Also the music is excellent. I'm really tired of all the same "conspiracy theory" music -- ridiculously slow arpeggios on a synthesizer with eerie vibrato, it's all the same.
Why does education need to be compulsory? Isn't having free education available enough? No govt monopoly that way...
My son went to a Montessori nursery and what he got from it was no better or worse than a state one (looking at mates' nippers).
Learning 8 hours a day is boring for all nippers, at least the Swedes picked the right age to start. Remove schools though and you are left with a void.
compulsory schooling just made me want to ditch. The teachers were a complete joke.
Its a good thing i would draw during math class. Fuck math. Seriously. School should let the child PICK a career they want, then let them study on their own (with help, of course) with encouragement. Its fucked up, because i just couldnt use math properly, and it screwed me, so i just kept to drawing. And now i can make 200 bucks a day drawing stupid pictures. Can math do that for me? Hell no
This really is a White middle-class and middle class in general issue. People or different socioeconomic status have different issues concerning schools.
But if we are talking about sensorship and schools teaching a pro American view on history and current events... Why would public schools teach in a way that could be viewed as anti-American. There would be less good than bad to gain.
Without compulsory education many children would suffer even greater from abuses and neglect. It I a way of ensuring a minimal amount of care for all children
Choices are available for upper and middle class parents. Those who don't fit that bill are somewhat screwed. The likelihood of major shifts in education are nil. It's a big monster of a broken machine that needs so much work. What our kids need th most are good parents. School is in a sense daycare. Real education should take place with the family.
Apparently I have to repeat this. There is no point in you continuing your argument and asking questions when I don't agree with your assumptions. I don't agree on so many levels that there's really no use in continuing this, I don't have the energy right now. I wanted to maybe come to a "agree to disagree" conclusion with you but you're having none of it. I will end this here.
