The original Dillards, live at the Tonder Festival in Denmark in 1999.
Probably the last time they came to Europe to play.

  • Maggie Peterson AKA Charlene is still alive, you can see here singing on another video here on you tube and it was after Mitch passed away and another verse was added also on that video

  • :) i live in Missouri not missour-uh right next to them there hills

  • charlene aka maggie is one of the nicest ladies i ever met.she comes to mt.airy every year.remember on the show she said this one makes her cry.

  • wheres charlene???

  • the dillards were great,,, but , charlene, made the song.

  • This takes me back 40 yrs. when Charlene sang it on the Andy Griffith Show. The arrangement was the best. Andy (add libed) and said, "I think that about the most beautiful thing I've ever heard." I think Charlene had passed on at this performance but I have to agree, it's one of the most beautiful and haunting songs I've ever heard. I don't know how they all connected, if they were family or just friends, but they were a winning combination.

  • Gots to have Charlene singing this tune boys, she takes it from a really good song to a great one!

  • Agree need Darlene!

  • @stoogepreacher Hahaha! "No, Pa! That'un makes me cry." lol But, you know, this one actually DOES make me cry.

  • I am pleasantly surprised at how marvelous these men sound, still! Generally, voices decay with time, but theirs still sounds wonderful! And don't get me started on that pickin'. . . I am absolutely in love with their music! I don't know if it's because I live in Kentucky, or what, but bluegrass just speaks to my soul. So beautiful.
