Great question! I use the pre-filter when I'm filling up in the wilderness and plan on using the same bottle. Otherwise I use one Nalgene for "contaminated water", then after it is treated I wipe off the inside lip and pour it into a clean Nalgene or Platypus type bottle. I don't have to worry about the outside threads cause the clean water doesn't touch them again. Hope that helps!

So simple and so effective. Do you have any figures on weights with batteries? And how long do the batteries last? Sorry to be such a pain about weight, but everything I do involves long distance, mountain, and or, desert travel. They are much bigger than I thought. I've only seen the packages. I'm Wowed, that's why I'm wondering about weight. Thanks for the demo. It seems so nifty an item not to have with you.

@slodeth5 Thanks for all of your comments! The Adventurer is 3.6oz with batteries. But I now use Lithium batteries for everything and they'll last at least double the life of regular batteries, plus they are really light weight! If you use regular batteries, they last about 40 treatments.  I have loads more info about it on the Hiking Lady website.

I understand how UV light destroys the bacteria present in water, but once the bacteria has released its toxins this method won't work.

So what do you do about the untreated water contaminating the lip and threads of the bottle when you first fill it?
