"For Robert Altman's 1980 film Popeye, he recruited Harry Nilsson to do the songs and Van Dyke Parks to do the film score. The songs were sung in the film by the characters, a la any musical, but the original demos of Harry singing them still exist.
Apparently Harry was not the clear cut choice to do the songs according to Altman, "Nobody wanted him at first except Robin Williams. Everyone said 'You'll get in trouble with him -- he'll get drunk; he won't do it; he's all washed up.' As a matter of fact I said all of those things about Harry to Robin myself one day. Then I went home and thought about it and said to myself, 'Jesus, that's what some people are saying about me!' So I called Harry Nilsson, because I had never met him in my life, and we got along terrifically."

  • Wow I thought all of the songs in this movie were amazingly terrible.. I can't believe Nilsson wrote them.. They're seriously as bad as Van Morrison's Ringworm. Flame away.

  • "The biggest tear I've ever seen came from the eye of a hurricane!"

    Harry was the best!!

  • This song always lumps up my throat.....

  • This movie was and still is a true MASTERPIECE because of Harry Nilsson.

  • I love this man unreservedly....No one has ever been able to imbue magic so casually into their art as this man. He was a natural and I miss his influence so much..Forget Elvis....There won't be another one like him...Ever.

  • Aside from Robin Williams, which seems obvious in retrospect, this was the best decision made on this film. The songs stand the test of time and I loved how P.T. Anderson used 'He Needs Me' in Punch Drunk Love. I hadn't seen the film in probably 20+ years and couldn't place it at first. These songs are all pure genius.

  • Two months ago I finished my longest Harry jag yet (seven months of nothing but) and I'm already ready to start a new one. Harry was a genius. He is so much missed.

Happy birthday, Harry, wherever you are. *mist*

  • @atimtambaby Glad to come across a fellow fan of Harry's music. Also I am thankful for a positive person to chat with as there are far too many of those deeply in the negative. Have you ever heard "Remember" by Harry???? It is one of my all-time favorites of his along with "Best Friend", the theme for The Courtship Of Eddie's Father tv show. Let me know what you think. I would be glad to hear back from you. Thanks pal. Brian

  • @Broblem12 Funny you say you're on a Harry jag. Me too, for the first time, I must admit. Way back when, I didn't get many of his biggest hist...Coconut? I was too young to get the joke.
