From the album "Don't Let the Moonlight Burn Your Eyes" (2007) this creepy multi-layered song explores the issue of homophobia from the perspective of an anti-gay-rights protester. The film shows footage of WWI and WWII Germany and although I am not into going to the extreme of making a direct parallel of going so far to say that those who take an anti-gay position are Nazis, but the fact that both situations begin with the "demonizing" of minorities as well as sexual minorities fueled action.
I filmed it the night before (10-13-09 uploaded 10-14-09) with my cell phone camera, my video equipment is still in storage out of state! Edited on Final Cut. Thanks to my landlord Newton for the basement, lights, glass coffee table and piano! I am a really bad trumpet player, but these cornet tracks in the song turned out so cool - also, this is my gay pride march hat that I made last summer with a rainbow flag with a cross on is that you really can't see... its made out of plastic from a craft store but in b&w it looked cool!
I sat on this project for years because I just could not figure out how to make a video work for this. I was inspired by a film about a Christian who tried to conspire to kill Hitler and helped Jews escape...
I use a touch of humor to try to express injustice in our world, I hope the message comes across.
Monster People
They have eyes like you
They have smiles like you
They seem wise they do - But they're not one of of us
The monster people look happy but they're not
The monster people say they're right but they're not
The monster people think they're smart yeah, yeah
The monster people
Don't let your children near the monster people
Don't let your children hear the monster people
Let's teach our children to fear the monster people
They should all be slaves
They should all live in caves
Look at the way he behaves - He's not one of us
They want to marry like us
Raise children like us
They want all these special things, yes they'll make such a fuss
They want jobs and houses and rights and spouses
They want all our special things...
