CAN-DO urgently needs your help to address the crisis on the Crow Creek Indian Reservation, the nations poorest county. Just this week, Central Electric Cooperative cut power on residents with only a two days notice, directly violating South Dakota Law, the company's policies of not doing winter disconnects, and the General Managers document commitment to work with the community to reach a solution. Can you imagine trying to survive when you are unable to work, have no means to support your family, and then have to live in sub-zero conditions with no power? The kicker is, the power is produced their own land! The Deal, when they built the Big Ben Damn, was that the residents would receive free electricity...that never happened, instead the residents of Crow Creek pay a 1/3 higher than anywhere in the State with an average income of under 5k.

This is blatant abuse and the destruction of a community. What people need to understand is that when a person gets their power cut, they not only lose their heat and lights, but they also lose their food and often times water because of broken pipes, costing the residents thousands of dollars in repairs. With no job opportunities, close to 80% of these residents go without income and are often denied government funding. When most families are forced to live on $25 per person per week in food stamps. Losing power is not only an inconvenience, its life threatening. These are unacceptable conditions and need our immediate attention. News agencies and government officials have turned their backs on these American citizens allowing these conditions to persist. Please write to the media and your representative to address this now!

  • I am old enough to remember visiting Rapid City in the early '50s and watching "Indian PowWows ." As five year old, what did I know about man's inhumanity to man? As it turns out, these indigenous Americans were forced from the beautiful Black Hills around Rapid City where they had natural resouces aplenty to relocate in central SD, a wasteland with no natural resources whatsoever. And worse, Gutzon Borglum had just finished Mt. Rushmore in 1941, a testament to the "new" "heroic" American.

  • I don't know about all of the NA reservations, but I do know that the Crow Creek indians along with the Lakota Sioux of South Dakota are without a doubt the poorest of poor and most neglected by this country's government. than any. Here in So. Cal. my wife and I live from month to month on my social security disability and two Supplimental Security Income checks, mine & hers. When will Washington start taking care of all Americans? or will they??

  • sadly it's not just there, here in my town the electric cost so much and all the jobs are leaving or already gone. I am a single mother of three and my bill on avg runs 150+ and that is with the bare min use. my electric if i dont find help will be off in 2 days our gas is already shut off. i want to be able to pay and i want to work i would scrub out horse trailers with my bare hands at a chance to work and keep the heat on (which i did while i was pregnant actually) Merry Christmas

  • I fought fire with them and they were so friking lazy and a majority are big drinkers. Just like in the old western could not put down the bozz. Majority over weight and fat etc lazy cry like babies when Fed dont give money. They destroy their land sell it for mining and logging the want an exchange with forest service.

  • Natives want everything handed to them go get job and get the f off your ass stop blaming whites for your problems. I lived in Alaska the Natives rape their own childern like dogs.

  • How can i help some one there in C.C.Hope some one now ore contact me....so i can help some one there.Go on my page and send me a notis.

  • This is a sham.here in Norway is it not allowd to cut the power in winter time.Feel so sorry for the people in Crow Creek.

  • The world shall know about the atrocious treatment of Crow Creek citizens!

The emergency situation needs to be attended to immediately. Sack and arrest those persons leading the destruction of this community, and appoint in their place only humane, responsible, proactive people to manage CEC.

I am horrified that American citizens have worked in unison over time to cause other human beings, their fellow countrymen, women & children, to be brought to survival conditions and the brink of death.
