Author Marie-Elena John (www.marie-elenajohn.com)discusses her novel UNBURNABLE, recently nominated for the prestigious Hurston-Wright Legacy Award in the Debut Fiction category. She was named a "major new voice in fiction" by Essence magazine, and Best Debut Fiction of 2006 by Black Issues Book Review. UNBURNABLE is hailed as a page-turner. It entails unflinching examinations of society and culture, color and class; and landmark chapters describe the history of Caribbean Carnival, as well as a brutal rape with a broken shard of a Coke bottle, with paralles to Female Genital Mutilation in Africa. UNBURNABLE is a suspenseful, intelligent murder mystery that will keep readers guessing until the very last page.

  • Marie-elena was here in Dominica over the weekend of August 7-11 in a literary and book fair and i was very impressed with her work. I must say i have not gotten the book yet but i will.

  • Congratulations Marie-Elena John. I love the cover and title. It looks like you on the cover. Very lovely. Sounds like an interesting read as well. I'll get it for my daughter.

  • i may be 14 yrs old but iris is my favorite character in the book

lilian is crazy and what ms.richard did to iris was wrong and matilda is creepy but not evil in my opinion

  • Marie-Elena John is my godmother. She is a great person and a great writer. I absolutley love her. OH AND ONE MORE THING! Her name is pronounced like maralena. not marie elena like two sep. names.

    i love you aunty mar!

  • very good book

  • Excellent book...John captures so much...grabs you.

Unconventional thinking...provokes deep thought as she entwines and contrasts the cultures of the Kalinago, the Negre maron, the liberated and run away slaves, the runaway Lebanese, the ethnically paralyzed, the innocent Caucasian savior-nun in turn liberated...

You are brought there...feel the precipitous paths, complexity of life's perceived reality checks that span generations...

Can't wait for her next book

    Dr Armour
