When Colin Stokes' 3-year-old son caught a glimpse of Star Wars, he was instantly obsessed. But what messages did he absorb from the sci-fi classic? Stokes asks for more movies that send positive messages to boys: that cooperation is heroic, and respecting women is as manly as defeating the villain. (Filmed at TEDxBeaconStreet.)

I have an idea. How about you stop relying on animated movies to parent your kids and do the job yourself?

And I'm so grateful they will be replaced with a new batch of bigots. Get over yourself!

Did he say that the kid couldn't watch it because of violence? No.

It's nothing to do with parenting your kids with movies. It's about what your kids take in from the movies that they watch, especially if they are too young to analyse the movies.

Directors also have made movies that failed to sell. They don't know what the audience wants to see. They make movies how they want them, not how you want them.

Very interesting, succinct, well-done. I also thought of the well-known effect of male vs. female protagonists in kid's fiction: girls can identify with male hero as well as (of course) with female heroes. But boys have had real difficulty identifying with a GIRL hero. (So publishers always lean on authors: main character = boy!) It's changing, but still around. I think this is nested in Colin's topic.
Here's to a future of fully rounded human beings. Yep, entertainment is part of that.

I understand where Colin is comin g from however this star wars theme has been around a lot longer than i believe he thinks. Luke is an archetype that has been around since the Odyssey and maybe even prior to that. it's a hard theme to destroy since it is so deep within our faith as human beings in general. I understand what he wants to diminish but it is a little harder than just changing how movies should present their protagonists.
