Portal 2 for PC running in Ubuntu 11.10 with Wine 1.3. We take a look a Chapter 9 - The Part Where He Kills You.

Portal2 is rated as Platinum in Wine's Application Database, however I believe its more like Gold as there are a couple of Bugs, such as Lagging when a New Sound Effect is played and a workaround needed for OpenSource ATI Drivers.

Installation:-
Download & Install Steam Client from http://www.steampowered.com
The Steam Client is rated Platinum in Wine, so you can treat it as you would a standard Windows Install.

Install Portal 2 through the Steam Client.
No workarounds are needed for the installation of either Steam or Portal 2
(I bought the game for PS3 which came with a free download for PC version)

Workarounds for Gameplay:-
Audio Lagging: Set Audio Quality in Portal 2 to Low Quality
ATI Opensource Drivers: Switch to FGLRX Driver in Wine.
See Wine App DB for more info: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=23278

System Settings:-
OS: Ubuntu 11.10 x64 bit
Wine: 1.3.37
CPU: AMD 1100T (3.3GHz 6 Core)
RAM: 16GB DDR3
Graphics Card: nVidia GTX 560ti
nVidia Driver: 280.13
Graphics set to 1920x1080, Anti-Aliasing 4x, and all Textures, Shadows, and Effects set to High
Recorded with gtk-recordmydesktop and sound-recorder

  • I'll switch to Ubuntu when they incorporate commercial software into their OS so that I don't have to use this piece of shit wine every time I want to play a game or use Photoshop, that is my only problem with Ubuntu otherwise its the best OS out there.

  • @oliver2k94 There already is pay for apps available in the Software Centre, but even with all the popularity of Ubuntu the sales figures don't appear to be that high.

I think the 10th most purchased app only sold less than 30 copies.

  • Quid mate, Do you ever think that the bloatware that is M$ Windows will ever be hit off its Pedestal in the gaming market?

  • @Blackinator101 I think the biggest dent that can be made is with the consoles. Unless many of the big gaming companies start producing Linux versions of their games Windows is going to remain at the top for a long time yet.

Its a shame nothing came of Steam producing a Linux client

  • Which video card is most Linux friendly? Nvidia, ATI, other?

  • @Laoch111 I would say nvidia because they're good at keeping their drivers up to date

  • @Blackinator101 Windows 7 is *FAR* from bloatware - excellent OS. Linux Ubuntu is excellent too, but Win 7 is just as good overall IMO.

  • nice system specs m8 :)

  • I figured some of the lag was due to recording it while playing it
