Malaysian police squashed a demonstration Wednesday near the venue of the East Asia Summit, detaining six opposition activists protesting human rights abuses at home as well as in Myanmar and Thailand.
Police briefly scuffled with a handful of activists and snatched their banners before they could be unfurled in a small park, about 100 meters (yards) from the Kuala Lumpur Convention Center (near the Petronas Twin Towers) where Asian leaders were meeting.
Uniformed police also took away plastic boxes containing pamphlets denouncing the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which held summit meetings on Monday and Tuesday before hosting the East Asia Summit with six other countries on Wednesday.
"ASEAN leaders have sat for two days and discussed nothing on human rights," said Tian Chua, one of the six people detained, before he was led away.
"Today ASEAN has proved itself to be a club of dictators who refuse to listen to any form of criticism from its people," said Tian, spokesman for Malaysian opposition People's Justice Party.
The party had planned a public demonstration to protest against ASEAN's failure to secure the freedom of Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi and to bring about democracy in that military-ruled country.
They also were protesting against alleged human rights abuses in Malaysia and in Thailand's southern provinces where the government is battling an Islamic insurgency.
Among those arrested were two women, one of whom was dragged to the ground as she shouted "police brutality, police brutality." All four were taken away in a police van.
Earlier, Zafar Ahmed, president of the Myanmar Rohingya Human Rights Organization in Malaysia said "Myanmar is a responsibility of all ASEAN countries.
"Release Aung San Suu Kyi ... and stop violation of human rights. Treat us with justice," he said.

yes.. the police has the right to check if they suspect anything.. but right here u know they are checking juz becoz some BN fella wanna stir up problem.. street protest with racial issue is a BIG NO !! but street protest on politics.. the person who say no is an Ass***e..
This is nothing to do with race... I think the police has rights to do so.. they were assuming that the stuffs that lady holding might be offensive, so they are 100% fine to check it. As a citizen, we should be cooperative. If there was nothing wrong with the stuffs she was holding, why didn't she show it to the police? This is video is bullshit. There is no police brutality or whatsoever, they are just doing their job. Think about it!
stupid woman..police just do their work..why she hardly to cooperate?if she innocent ,she got nothing to worry..this kind of people always make some issue become troublesome
Y Malay Dogs lag behind the 2 major minorities? Malay Dogs cannot use their mind to figure out what flaws in Islam. Islam is designed to indoctrinate Melayu Anjing against beliefs of others. If only Melayu Anjing can use their commonsense (if they have some) there'll be Melayu Hindus, Melayu Buddhists, Melayu Christians, Melayu Taoist, etc. Y only Islam has Syariah Law to prevent Melayu anjing from leaving Islam? Y don't we c there's a need for Buddhist Law, Hindu Courts, etc?
