Pool (no water) by Mark Ravenhill
This is a recording of our Theatre Studies A.S Level Practical Exam at Calday Grange Grammar School in March 2009.
Pool (no water) was first performed by Frantic Assembly, a Theatre company who focus mainly on physical theatre and the portrayal of a story through movement just as much as through words.
It is a story of a group of 4 artists who have been close friends for many years and gone through the highs and lows of being amateur artists. One of their friends, who used to be a fifth member of their little group, made it big in the art world and went from the street art these 4 try to live off, to living in the big time, big house, flashy car, loads of money. This artist invites her 4 old friends round for a get together one night, during which she jumps into her pool .... 'we thought we heard the splash ... but there was no splash ...' She hits the bottom of the empty pool and ends up in hospital. The 4 amateur artists round her bedside start to see 'beauty' in the image of her mangled body and begin to make an art project based on her injuries. Their moral compasses are thrown out the window and their minds become infected with the evil and sadistic idea of turning her near death into art in a way of revenge for how she simply dumped them when she made it big. But there is a major twist ... was this all planned ... and if so, who planned it to happen ...?
Wow, I'm impressed. I'm a third year drama student, and I was looking up Frantic Assembly's version of Pool (no water), and this came up. And I'm glad it did. I loved the physical work here. Was Frantic Assembly your only inspiration?
Thank you, I enjoyed this a lot. And well done for doing this piece. Not many people have done it (successfully).

Thanks very much! :) We loved doing this piece back in lower 6th :D We looked a little bit at DV8 because of their high level of physical theatre and dance work, but apart from that we just went with what we knew of physical theatre and experimented and this was the final result! I'm glad you like it! I must say there are many ways to do it and still make it look amazing, for example Artaud (there are a few videos around on youtube) but personally i think physical theatre is the way forward :)
