The first two german dances from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's set of six, KV 509.

Although it does not take genius to write great dances, whereas it takes genius to write truly great symphonies, operas etc., the dances of Mozart, Beethoven etc. do still show their consummate skill in composition and display the way they lead in all forms of musical composition.

Only the first two are here because they are all in one file and I had already prepared the file for something else and decided it worth uploading here too. It's a shame to some extent since the third is also cracking good fun like these (as for the other three, I'm not so familiar with them).

Either way, these serve as a great example of how the great masters show their skill even in what could be considered their most throwaway forms of composition.

PS. Listeners may recognise the second 8 bar phrase of the first dance (after the repeat of the first 8 bar phrase) as being from the brilliant film about Mozart, 'Amadeus', in the scene where Constanze decides she feels wrong being away at the spa at Baden, and decides to leave in the middle of the dance.

  • weird that this right here was the hip-hop of the day, i.e. what people casually danced to. it would rule if people were still into this

  • Haha, too right!

  • I could probably post the rest at some point! And I'm not sure of the exact occasion, Mozart was routinely commissioned to write dances for the Viennese balls!

  • Que maravilla de música, es alucinante!

  • Mozart was employed by the courts in Vienna to compose seasonal dance music.

  • All of Mozart's Dances and Marches were once available on London Records - about 12 or 13 Lps I believe.
