This was the empty-hand staged combat scene we did in the MASC Falmouth High School Fight Week. Again, this Shakespearean scene was altered by Fight Director Mark Bedell... it was further altered by the actors who only had a very short time to learn the lines (along with the lines from several other scenes) they did paraphrase a bit. Again, this is a workshop situation, no one is trying to pass this off as "performance ready". The point here is to show 13 and 14 year old students with minimal (but quality) training performing SAFELY in an art form that is perceived as dangerous. Done wrong, staged combat (like anything else done wrong) can be dangerous... but done right... it can be an amazing experience in technical and physical acting for young theatre students. Fight Director Mark Bedell works with professional actors all this time in Theatre, Opera and Film who have never had this type of training and the entire production suffers because actors/singers don't properly prepare themselves. KUDOS to the parents of theatre students at Falmouth High School in Maine who sought out this training .
This seems like a great workshop! A lot for the kids to learn in such a short time.
