I began crying halfway through listening to this aria right after I stumbled upon it just a few minutes ago. I'm no expert, but I use my common sense in judging things, which means very few things ever get my 100% approval. But this woman hit the sweet spot of forcefulness, timber, energy and just utterly breathtaking emotion. With the violin echoing her sentiments, it was the perfect storm of melancholy that hit me from nowhere. The best aria I have ever heard, and I've heard my share.

Magdalena Kozena's voice is so perfect for this, isn't it? Her voice has this kind of innocence and purity that (I think, I'm a just a student) Matthaus Passion is all about. It's just so ineffibly beautiful! Wonderstruck here. :)

While Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 (1st movement) has elements of jazz to me, with this aria, one can be sad and desperate, yet gather enough dignity to dance the tango. Bach was so much ahead of his time. Such was his genius!
