231nm off Puerto Rico, sailing closehauled in 20-25 knots of breeze, barely fetching San Juan; after 1000 miles of offshore sailing from Charleston, SC in April 2007. Navigation details; video of sea-state, hull's sea-kindliness, and life aboard.

  • What's goin' on, what's happnin' brother?

    You still in PR?

  • Hello, @lackawannakid... Modern Geographic has been leading Sailing Expeditions in the Caribbean. This year we've led 10 Expeditions covering the following nations: Puerto Rico, Spanish Virgin Islands, USVI, BVI, Anguilla, St. Martin, Sint Maarten, St. Kitts/Nevis, Montserrat, Bermuda, and Portugal. Solstice has really come through for us and she's been such a great offshore sailing yacht for training my clients in ocean sailing and navigation. We're based in the British Virgin Islands.

  • looks like a beautiful day.

Question for you, are you sailing with a monitor wind vane?

If so, did you have it connected and in use for your nightmare riding the gulf stream in April '07?

I ask because I wonder how mine will perform in the same situation if I found myself there...

  • Hello, @anafan8888... Yes, in fact Solstice's MONITOR windvane was in use during this video. It works great in these conditions! I believe you'll have great luck using your Monitor in similar conditions.

  • I spent 2 years fixing an Allied Seabreeze 35 and your videos motivate me to use it. Keep it up, bro.

  • We'll be looking forward to more vids.

We looked at a cape dory 36 today, considering purchase, looking for a westsail 32 in my neighborhood.

    happy sailing

  • I'm leading the expedition and teaching offshore voyaging along the way. Keep an eye out for future Modern Geographic expeditions... THANKS!

  • lackawannakid! Thanks for your kind comment... it's always a pleasure to be understood.

Yes, I'm still actively sailing; in fact, Modern Geographic is departing on it's first Caribbean Sea Sailing Expedtion. On April 24, 2009 we'll sail for two weeks, departing from Fajardo, PR... sailing direct to Grenada... then sailing north along the Windward Islands... eventually sailing downwind under spinnaker to arrive at PR on May 8, 2009.
