SARASOTA - Our Athlete of the Week this week is quite the jack-rabbit for the Cardinal Mooney baseball team. Nick Conforti can do more than run, though.
The center fielder on most baseball teams is there because he is quick, so he usually leads off the batting order as well, and Nick Conforti of Cardinal Mooney High School is your prototypical center fielder. "He has been hot at the plate. He catches everything and he has a college-type arm. Speed-wise, his speed ensures that a walk or a single is a triple. It's a given," says Cougars baseball coach Greg Mulhollen.
Conforti is having a phenomenal senior year for the Cougars, as he is batting .550 with 3 triples and also a big home run. The young man is getting it done. "It means a lot. This team is filled with a lot of talent, and it pushes me to get better every day," says Conforti.
Conforti has his eye on playing baseball in college, and he might have a choice between two baseball programs. "He is looking to get a scholarship any day now; Either to St. John's in New York, or Florida Gulf Coast down in Fort Myers," says Mulhollen.
Nick is also fortunate to play with such driven teammates, because he uses them as motivation. "Mike Heller, John Zalid, Ryan Heuler, and Tommy Goodman all have scholarships, so coming out here everyday and playing with them definitely pushes my game to the next level."
Congratulations to Nick Conforti of Cardinal Mooney High School. He is our ABC 7 High School Athlete of the Week.
