Why is such a comparison ill made? Symbolism is symbolism. Why are vestments so important at Mass if habits are not that important in the world? Mass could be celebrated without vestments. What is important is bread and wine, the gathering of God's people, the proclamation of the Word and the saying of prayers. All else is superfluous. Vestments are a tradition that could come to an end.
There are always more important concerns. I thought we were talking about the habit here. If the habit isn't that important do you think it would be okay if a priest didn't wear vestments at Mass. Maybe this should be optional. It certainly would be more comfortable for the priest in the summer. After all, externals aren't really all that important.
It is wonderful to see a community of monks praying the Divine Office in choir and wearing the same habit. It wouldn't be the same if they were all dress in shirts and pants. The Springfield Dominicans wore a full habit until the mid 1980s. It was neat to see them in choir wearing the same beautiful Domincan habit. They were one of the last communities to make the habit optional.
@atheshar If people don't know a Sister is a Sister, they can miss out on her unique presence and witness in the world. Many people are actually approach Sisters because of the habit they wear. Habits can act as a magnet of sorts. Also, do you realize that most young women interested in religious life want to wear a habit. Often times the first question a young women will ask a vocation director is "Does your community wear a habit?"

@atheshar Still doesn't mean I like it. Habits tend to enhance a sense of unity...not necessary nice anyway.

Too bad you made the habit optional.
