filatova was by far the most polished gymnast in 1981. Gnauck was coming off injuries, davydova fell on vault and ilienko fell on beam, pretty much the entire romanian team from the olympics had retired leaving pretty much their juniors. i thought filatova should have beaten bicherova

@ralucagymnast Yes, Irina was great! I often wonder what happened to her?! You can find updates on almost all the other girls of that generation but I've never found any info on her really. Oh, your Romanian born? Great gymnasts from there:) So now I see the Masha connection and why. I was trying to be playful or funny but I apologize for my idiotic comments earlier. Please forgive me.

@justinmjb I have to agree about Irina; was there ever a better dancer on the Soviet team? You must forgive me, I am Romanian born, and Maria is better known as Masha you see:) You have good taste in gymnasts though:)

@ralucagymnast LOL. Thanks sugartits:) P.S. Masha is ok. But she's no Irina Baraksonova or Natalia Frolova in my book. But to each their own! It was however, still the old days of gym so she certainly was ahead of her time and quite lovely in her own way:) Cheers

I loved Masha; her body tension, essential for good gymnastics, is exceptional. Every move is tight and perfectly executed.
