I don't think any other type of magnet is strong enough.
They are very cheap to buy and they are a lot of fun to play with :)

you can just strip any old wire (i.e. power cord -make sure it's not plugged in lol, headphones, etc.)
the best is an old phone cord since there's 4 separate wires inside that you can use.

You could do that, just remember the wire has to be adequately thick to bend into shape. Preferably more thick then what I used.
