Jeff Buckley- Back in N Y C. From the album Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk(1998).

I see faces and traces of home back in New York City
So you think I'm a tough kid? Is that what you heard?
Well I like to see some action and it gets into my blood.
They call me the trail blazer - Rael - electric razor
I'm a pitcher in the chain gang, we don't believe in pain only as strong,
'cos we're only as strong, as the weakest link in the chain.
Let me out of Pontiac when I was just seventeen,
I had to get it out of me, if you know what I mean, what I mean.
You say I must be crazy, 'cos I don't care who I hit, who I hit.
But I know it's me thats hittin' out, and I'm, I'm not full of shit.
I don't care who I hurt. I don't care who I do wrong.
This is your mess I'm stuck in, I really don't belong.
When I take out my bottle, filled up high with gasoline,
You can tell by the night fires where Rael has been, has been.

As I cuddled the porcupine
He said I had none to blame, but me.
Held my heart, deep in hair,
Time to shave, shave it off, it off.
No time for romantic escape,
When your fluffy heart is ready for rape. No!
No time for romantic escape,
When your fluffy heart is ready for ape. No!
Off we go.

You're sitting in your comfort you don't believe I'm real,
You cannot buy protection from the way that I feel.
Your progressive hypocrites hand out their trash,
But it was mine in the first place, so I'll burn it to ash.
And I've tasted all the strongest meats,
And laid them down in coloured sheets.
Laid them down in coloured sheets.
Who needs illusion of love and affection
When you're out walking in the streets with your mainline connection?
Connection.

As I cuddled the porcupine
He said I had none to blame, but me.
Held my heart, deep in hair,
Time to shave, shave it off, it off.
No time for romantic escape,
When your fluffy heart is ready for rape. No!
... No time.

  • One thing I think people have to consider when being critical of this version is that Buckley may very well NEVER intended on releasing this. He had just left NYC after feeling like the walls had closed in on him and probably did the song as a liberation. Most of Buckley's close friends contend that he never would have let Sketches see the light of day in this state. Point being, this is not an 'album' by Jeff Buckley but rather a collection of recordings.

  • This isn't Jeffs BEST work and maybe its not all perfect and BLAH BLAH BLAH, who gives a shit? Its pretty awesome. Its a lot better than the shit being released now. I hate people who got something bad to say about everything...

Thanks for this song Jeffy. You shoulda let every word out of your mouth get recorded...

  • @keaner17 I agree. As I posted earlier... the thing that haunts is that Gabriel got into his blood... and it is obvious. The thing that is really amazing is that Gabriel got into his blood and mixed... and he did what would be a shitty (DEMO?) and his infected blood still infects us. I hate the big marketing machine. Jeff and Pete had more in common than anyone will be allowed to realize.

  • Part of this is the way Gabriel et al gets into his blood. And you hear it when you listen. And after that... it gets into my blood.

  • This guy is an inspiration to everyone. Whether you like him or not he's probably still your inspiration. Love live the Buckley's.

  • He was making an album called "My sweetheart the drunk" This is "SKETCHES for my sweetheart the drunk" meaning its just song rough ideas for songs..but his sketches are still better than most peoples work.

  • Jeff portrays Peter Gabriel's agony very well. Best cover of the song I've ever heard. Only complaint is: Where are the drums???

  • Surprisingly pretty good. You have to know the original though to really appreciate it.

  • WoW!!!!! I am a Genesis fan....but this is so good!!! keeps the edge!!

  • @TheOneEyedHound Clearly, you know nothing about Jeff Buckley.

  • @forrestnomoore Say what you will. A few of his songs are decent, but this is just a disgrace to Genesis. Worst part is, it's when Genesis was /actually good/.

This is just a junky alternative cover.
