Spoiler Theater: Ending to Shadow of the Colossus part 2/3
---
The ending of Shadow of the Colossus is long and well done, the end of it all, with and interactive segment or two that gives "false hope" to the player making them think there might be multiple endings or something. Though it is brilliant and one of the better endings in my opinion.

Part 2/3, part two of three

Shadow of the Colossus, released in Japan as Wander and the Colossus ワンダと巨像, Wanda to Kyozō, is a Japanese-developed action-adventure video game developed and published by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCEI) for the PlayStation 2. The game was released in North America and Japan in October 2005 and PAL territories in February 2006. The game was created by SCEI's International Production Studio 1, the same development team responsible for the cult hit Ico.

The game focuses on a young man named Wander who must travel across a vast expanse on horseback and defeat sixteen beings, known as colossi, to restore the life of a girl, Mono. The game is unusual within the action-adventure genre in that there are no towns or dungeons to explore, no characters with which to interact, and no enemies to defeat, other than the colossi. Shadow of the Colossus has been described as a puzzle game, as each colossus' weakness must be identified and exploited before it can be defeated.

  • I thought the saddest thing about this was the music used as Wander struggles to get to Mono. It's the same song that plays everytime you kill a colossus. It was a nice touch by the developers and definitely tugs on the heart strings.

  • @crashone1 Recently, I've been coming to realizations just like this with various games and seeing the hidden beauty they all have, be it from the musical score, a tragic plot event, or superb character development / interactions and more.

  • Question, why didn't they seal the land before something like this happened?

  • @Geminilion100 Probably due to their beliefs, and holding that land and colossi sacred. It's probably that, but it could be anything really. In some games, the creators probably don't think about the "possible lore" of a game and just throw you into a premise with "enough details" to get the job done.

  • is it possible to kill everyone when you are in colossus form?

  • @veke94 I don't think the game is programmed that way. It's probably meant as a struggle scene that eventually overtakes you. A "resistance is futile" moment.

  • People who say the ending is BAD, it isn't true, it's one of the best endings i've seen, but the only prolem is that it's quite sad. You go to all that trouble to save the Mono, and when you think ou've done it, you die. I really feel bad for Wander, especcially how he tries to reach Mono while being sucked. I even cried!

  • I like what the game does here, when they give you control, no matter how hard you try, you can never reach Mono. That feeling of helplessness and despair, just as Wander himself would have felt.

  • iv played shadow of the colossus and i found it wayyyy to confusing i think that because i tryed to play it when i was like 10 or somthing like that and i do not feel like dusting off my PS2

  • If you put close attention you can actually hear Wander calling out Mono's name @ 1:39 now that a sad scene, getting sucked into the abyss knowing you will never be able to see your loved one again

  • One thing I find interesting about this game. The first time I played it I was so invested in the story about Wander trying to bring the girl back to life, I didn't think about my own actions. Looking back it seems apparent that I was wrong in killing the colossi for my own selfish desire, and that when I kill these beautiful creatures, there is a real sense of loss. But I was blinded by Wander's own painful story at first. This game is a work of art

The gameplay is also great of course :)

  • @YorkJonhson I did the same. What an absolutely fantastic ending.

  • that was gay if only there was a way so you could not get sucked in.

  • I remember clutching onto that last step before being sucked in when my energy gave out.

    Beautiful moment in gaming.

  • well this game ending certainly implys a "look before you leap" life style

  • @StoneMonkWisdom Definitely. Video games have a lot to offer if you look hard enough. However, I feel with games, you can tell which ones were made with talent and love (Shadow of the Colossus being one of those games). Those games include a lot of what you mentioned above (character interactions, music, etc.)
