SOWK 300 Flashcards Causal Words and Phrases

Variables and their Values Flash Cards Set

(make sure you do not attempt to copy flash card sets from previous students from previous classes - that would constitute cheating)

Each student will be required to build their own set of flashcards. Students can create a set of flash (20) cards using 3 X 5 index cards. For the causal words and phrases you may use the set that was given to you during class.

Students must select 20 variables and include their values from the GSS data file. (use a variety of different variables - no two variables may be the same- no two students should have identical cards - there are hundreds of variables to choose from - do not just make up variables and values)

Students may only use variables from the GSS survey website located at
http://sda.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin32/hsda?harcsda+gss06

The General Social Survey (GSS)The GSS started in 1972 and completed its 26th round in 2006. For the last third of a century the GSS has been monitoring social change and the growing complexity of American society. The GSS is the largest project funded by the Sociology Program of the National Science Foundation. Except for the U.S. Census, the GSS is the most frequently analyzed source of information in the social sciences.

The GSS contains a standard 'core' of demographic and attitudinal questions, plus topics of special interest. Many of the core questions have remain unchanged since 1972 to facilitate time trend studies as well as replication of earlier findings. The GSS takes the pulse of America, and is a unique and valuable resource. It is the only survey that has tracked the opinions of Americans over an extended period of time. The GSS is also a major teaching tool. We know of over 14,000 research uses such as articles in academic journals, books, and Ph.D. dissertations based on the GSS and about 250,000 students annually who use it in their classes.

Read the help menu and instructions FIRST (Read Variable Selection)

Turn in your flash cards on or before the deadline posted in your course calendar.

Flash cards, must be submitted in an large envelope which closes and include the students name on the outside. The student must also place their name on each flashcard.

Students may use http://educationalpress.org/ to assist with the layout of their cards or create a table in powerpoint, or word, then cut out and glue (no staples) to the 3x5 index cards. All cards must be neat and typed.
Neatness and completeness counts!!!

There is nothing for you to submit in Blackboard - you only need to turn in your flashcards according to the instructions given!
